Games That Eat Up the Hours

For those gamers in the audience, you’ve likely come across a game that grabbed you and wouldn’t let go. The hours stack up, the soda cans and chip bags fill the trash can, but you don’t get up until sleep claims you at some point in the wee hours of the morning two days later. Tabletop, console game, PC game, it’s all the same once the addictive one gets its claws into you!

For me, it’s usually JRPGs. Any of the Final Fantasy games from 1 through 9, the Ogre Battle games, the Mana series, etc. I’d play and play and play those until my eyes were dry and my hands were cramping. These days I don’t have much time with games unless I’m playing the Nintendo Switch with my four year old (and she doesn’t seem inclined to play games much at the moment), but I do try to make a little bit of time for Rimworld on the PC. The randomness of that game makes it a frustrating but hilarious experience. One minute you’re running a little space colony and doing well, the next you’re being overrun by a wild pack of rabid yorkshire terriers. And with the newest expansion, you can build a ship to fly around the planet you’re trapped on. More hijinks can ensue! If colony builders are your thing, you can’t go wrong with Rimworld. Well, maybe your wallet can. It can get pricey with all the DLC!

There are two ways to play the game. You can do it casually with no random encounters on, or you can throw caution to the wind and have fun with all the craziness an alien world can provide. You can adjust that on the fly, as well. If you want to spend time building up your base and defenses before you let hell break loose, you can do so. If you want it to run in the background while you work or write, you can do that in either mode. It will pause when something bad or important is going on. I’ve got several hundred hours sunk into it over the last few years, but I’m a lightweight compared to some of the Steam user reviews out there!

Anyway, enough of my rambling about games. On to some book stuff!

Wolf’s in it up to his neck, and the only way out is through the blood and the lies… He’s got a .38 in his coat, a score to settle, and nothing left to lose.

The city’s about to learn: you don’t corner a wounded Wolf.
