What Kickstarter Projects Do You Love to Support?

As we’re gearing things up for our cross-country move, one of my tasks is to sort through everything we’ll need to change our address on, from paperwork to items we pre-ordered months ago. Among those pre-ordered items are various Kickstarter projects we’ve backed, and it got me thinking: what kind of Kickstarter projects do the readers of Three Ravens enjoy supporting? And how far do you go? Most projects have a low-level “Thanks for your support!” entry tier of $1 to $5, all the way up to insane tiers in the thousands of dollars or greater. What’s your favorite kind of project, and where’s your happy middle-ground on what you’re willing to contribute?

As for me, I find myself backing a lot of video game projects, mostly in the retro vein. And my contributions vary from $20-30 for digital-only releases such as a Metroidvania called Mandragora to $80 or more for ones that come in a physical format, such as The Fallen Crown for the, another Metroidvania coming out on the old Gameboy Color and with its campaign ending August 2nd.

My very first was the long-awaited sequel to the Tex Murphy series of full-motion video point-and-click adventure games from the 90s, Tex Murphy: Project Fedora. The game’s available on GOG and Steam now under the final title of “The Tesla Effect”, but years ago it needed the funding in order to get off the ground!

Fans of film noir and satire will love this series of games!

In addition to games, I’m a sucker for a neat book or set of books. I’ve backed everything from graphic novels (Vampire Hunter D: Message from Mars) to special editions (Special Bestiary Edition of the Frith Chronicles) to the record-shattering Brandon Sanderson Four Secret Novels collection. In addition to getting excellent physical copies and extra rewards by backing these projects, I get a… sense of accomplishment that’s difficult to explain. I feel like I’m helping bring something to life that otherwise might not have been. That sensation is there the most if I’m an early backer before the funding goal is reached, but I feel it even if I’m a late arrival. There’s just something special about being part of a project.
