A Bit of a Western Thing…

I’ll admit to being somewhat partial to wild west stories, though for me it’s mostly movies and video games rather than short stories and novels. I grew up watching Gunsmoke reruns with my grandparents and all kinds of films with my dad (Any John Wayne or Sam Elliott western, Tom Selleck films like Quigley Down Under or Last Stand at Saber River, to name a few) and playing video games like Gunsmoke, Tinstar, and—more recently—Red Dead Redemption, to name a few.

There are JRPGs and anime inspired by the wild west that are worth mentioning, such as the Wild Arms series of games and space westerns like Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star. All worth your time and effort, if these are genres and mediums you prefer!

Now, all that to say, we’ve got a couple of westerns coming out by Brisco Woods in the next couple of months. You won’t be disappointed in them! The first one comes out May 8th, and the second

Out of Tennessee — 05/08/2026

At sixteen, Silas Beatty had been doing a man’s work and fighting a man’s fights for four years. As part of Tinker Dave Beatty’s scouts, he had learned guerilla warfare from one of the best. Giving hell to the reb’s whenever they found them, the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia were home and battleground for the young man.

With the War Between the States ending, the folks hoped their lives would become normal again. For Silas, who had spent a full third of his life fighting a bloody war, normal had a different look.

When some of the local Rebel supporters humiliated his mother and sister, hell rained down from his twin Navy Colts. Following advice from his older brother, Silas made the difficult decision to leave the only place he had ever known as home. Not sure what lay in front of him, he only knew he had to get out of Tennessee.

By Way of Texas — 06/12/2026

Silas Beatty had come west after the War Between the States looking for, something. The seemingly endless cattle drive from Texas to Montana had been a good start. Drifting back south, he had worked for the railroad, hunted Buffalo, and anything else to make a dollar. He had lived with, worked with, and fought Indians along the way.

Still looking for something and not knowing what, he found himself in south Texas working with a small Ranger unit. These men were men he respected, tough and smart. He finally found what that thing was he had been searching for.

The life of a Texas Ranger, however, was anything but easy. That was just fine with Silas Beatty, for he was not an easy person. He excelled in the life whether recovering stolen livestock from rustlers, or hunting down killers, his Colt’s were judge, jury, and executioner.

When ghosts from his past began to haunt his trail, he had to face challenges he had sought to avoid. But now that they were here, he’d not hide from them or ask for help. He was taught early in life how to face problems, and he’d face them the only way he knew how. A Colt in each hand and cold flint in his eyes.
